Online Gay Marriage License?

Two researchers are urging states that have approved same-sex marriage to offer marriage licenses online. The marriages are currently legal in only four states, and the move could ease a bottleneck for out-of-state applicants. But critics say those states deserve the revenue from actual – not virtual – wedding trips.

Same-sex marriage is legal in just four U.S. states — New Hampshire will become the fifth on Jan. 1 — a situation that forces gay couples everywhere else to travel to places like Vermont and Iowa to be wed.

Two Michigan State University professors think there’s a better way. They say states that offer same-sex marriage should allow couples anywhere in the country to obtain a marriage license online. But skeptics of this plan abound.

On a Saturday afternoon in 2004, Chris Swope and his partner, Brad Rakowski, exchanged vows in a Lansing, Mich., church before their family and friends.

Two days later, the couple had a second, quieter ceremony in Windsor, Ontario. That’s where they signed the papers that bestowed on them the Canadian province’s legal blessing.

And that poses a dilemma, Swope says.

“You know, it kind of throws us up in the air about which is our real anniversary,” he said. “The one that was more meaningful and heartfelt but has zero legal recognition, or the one that’s legally recognized.”

Swope’s home state of Michigan is one of 29 that impose constitutional restrictions on marriage.

Legal researcher Adam Candeub believes the situation creates a national roadblock.  Read more………

My Way Reports

HOUSTON (AP) – Voters in a hotly contested runoff election will decide Saturday whether Houston will become the largest U.S. city to elect an openly gay mayor.

City Controller Annise Parker has never made a secret or an issue of her sexual orientation, but others have lately catapulted it into the center of the mayoral race.

Anti-gay activists and conservative religious groups have endorsed her opponent, former city attorney 61-year-old Gene Locke. Some have also sent out mailers condemning Parker’s “homosexual behavior.” Read more…..

Obama Is Criticized on AIDS Program

New York Times Reports

As the Obama administration slowly unveils its global AIDS plan, the drive to put more people on drugs is being scaled back as emphasis is shifted to prevention and to diseases that cost less to fight, including pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria and fatal birth complications.

AIDS advocates complained bitterly that they had been betrayed and that the Bush administration’s best legacy was being gutted — and they blame a doctor and budget adviser who is also the brother of the White House chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel.

“I’m holding my nose as I say this, but I miss George W. Bush,” said Gregg Gonsalves a long-time AIDS campaigner. “On AIDS, he really stepped up. He did a tremendous thing. Now, to have this happen under Obama is really depressing.”

But Dr. Eric Goosby, the new global AIDS coordinator and chief of Pepfar, the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, denied that the administration’s dedication to fighting AIDS had shrunk, noting that more people would still be put on treatment each year. “We’re honoring our commitment, we’re increasing our commitment, we will not veer from that commitment,” Dr. Goosby said.
